Aniss Abderrahim (Morocco, No. 2)

Aniss Abderrahim

'I started playing in 1998 and I am a setter.  I have always loved sport ever since I was a child and was always interested in athletics and swimming as well as sitting volleyball.  The sport allows me to represent my country and I feel that my teammates need me.

I got involved in a disabled association which was offering various kind of sports to the members and then I chose to play sitting volleyball. I suffered from polio when I was younger hence why I started playing disabled sports to a high standard.

I train 4 times a week times a week thanks to King Mohammed VI who opened a centre for disabled people in 2006. The facilities are free and we can train many times a week. I play for the club of the Association Sportive de Salé pour personnes handicapées (for disabled people) and I am the captain of the team.

My most memorable moment is when I first played for the national team 18 years ago.  I have played in many competitions since (2002 World Championships preliminary in Egypt, 2007 Club Championships in Syria, 2010 World Championships in Oklahoma, 2011 African Championship to qualify for the Olympic games in Egypt, 2012 Paralympic Games, 2014 World Championships in Elblag)

I have had to make compromises to play for the national team, at the 2014 World Championships in Elblag, I left my 3 week old baby Mouad behind with his mum so that I could play sitting volleyball.

My current coach is Mr Mana and he is the founder of sitting volleyball in Morocco.  He is very close to us.

I think there are not too many clubs and associations that offer Sitting Volleyball – there is no advertising for the sport – and there are not enough coaches.'
